Award Recognition

The trio are connecting from a break, where they're taking a pause after an lengthy tour in support of their fourth album, I Quit.

They're currently processing the news it's been nominated for Best Rock Album at the Grammys – with Haim the pioneering female band ever in contention for the trophy.

"I follow the announcements every year, so it kind of feels like a surreal movie when your name is announced," notes Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this right or am I imagining things'?"

The significance of the honor is deeply felt by the band.

"We truly set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a major milestone," continues Alana. "But we're just thankful for the female artists that came before us."

Heartbreak and Candor

The project came out of a time of emotional upheaval. All three sisters were single, and the music inhabits that unique transitional period where you're happy to be free, but not yet ready to move on.

The themes track endings and goodbyes. The sisters seek love, but not the specific love they've experienced. You can hear them determining in the moment who they aspire to be.

"I adore description, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is like a slogan. You have to make an effort in shutting out the noise and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Refinement of Sound

That recent confidence demanded a new sound – more organic and immediate than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that started with the drums.

"Drums are such a nuanced thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our biography," quips Alana. "Our motto is, our albums cannot begin until we find the perfect drum sound."

Stories and Collective Camaraderie

The band's candor inspired the album's rollout, where the sisters revealed some of their dating tales.

Someone broke up with Este over a medical concern. Alana recalled a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"During these setbacks, you just feel like there's no hope," explains Alana. "Thus to be able to laugh at those stories and have them tell you even crazier stories, it's therapeutic."

An Assured Path

It's not difficult sense a evolution in the band. These days, Haim are more confident of their position in the industry.

They're festival headliners, with hit albums and an international following.

However Haim will consistently be their top priority.

"Me and my siblings have been performing since I was a young child," shares Alana. "It's like no other path that we were supposed to do. And I'm really thankful we've made it and we're still kicking."
